Hivamat is an acronym for Histological Variable Manual Technique.  A new FDA cleared device that has been extremely successful in the physical therapy market.  The device creates an action of pulsating low-frequency, two-phase alternating electrostatic field generated between the physical therapist’s hands and patient’s tissue.  The movement of one of the electrodes causes a moving of electrically neutral molecules in exposed tissues.  The resulting dipoles rotate in accordance with changes in field polarity.  This is accompanied by alternating elevations and depressions of corresponding tissue and development of intensive sympathetic vibration.

In short a treatment with Hivamat has the following positive effects on the treated tissue; muscles are relaxed, alleviation of pain is enhanced, mobility is promoted, inflammation is reduced, and blood flow to the area is increased.

ultrasoundUltrasound and Electrical Stimulation

Ultrasound therapy is also used for therapeutic effects.  Ultrasound uses acoustic energy at a high frequency.  A continuous wave produces thermal effects.  These thermal effects include increased blood flow, a reduction of stiffness and spasm, an increase in flexibility of tendon and joint capsules, and decreased pain.  Pulsed waves typically produce non-thermal effects.  These effects include tissue regeneration, collagen synthesis, an increase in blood flow, and a reduction of edema, an excess of fluid which causes swelling.

In the physical therapy setting, some procedures include the use of electrical current to stimulate a therapeutic effect on the body. When applied to tissue, electric currents create thermal, physiologic, and chemical responses. The currents also alter pain impulses. Interferential stimulation is the most commonly used form of electrical stimulation used in the physical therapy setting. Two channels of electrical stimulation create a third current that penetrates the affected tissues with little resistance. This stimulation helps control pain and muscle contractions. Interferential stimulation also reduces edema, swelling caused by fluid in the body’s tissues.

These forms of therapeutic treatment along with massage therapy can help reduce pain and get you moving in the right direction toward recovery.

BiodexBiodex Balance System SD

The Biodex Balance System SD has been designed to meet the needs of everyone looking to improve balance, increase agility, develop muscle tone and treat a wide variety of pathologies.  Extremely versatile, it is the only system that provides a fast, accurate fall risk screening and conditioning program for older adults; closed-chain, weight-bearing assessment and training for lower extremity patients.  The Balance System SD also serves as a valuable training device to enhance kinesthetic abilities that may provide some degree of compensation for impaired proprioceptive reflex mechanisms following injury.  Using this unique device, our physical therapists can assess neuromuscular control by quantifying the ability to maintain dynamic bilateral and unilateral postural stability on a static or unstable surface.

FTS_GlidePrecor FTS Glide

The FTS Glide offers resistance training with freedom of motion to increase core strength, balance, stability and coordination.

scifit bike

SCIFIT Recumbent Bicycles

The SCIFIT recumbent bikes feature a true adjustable step through that adjusts up to a full 23 inches for safe and easy access.  They also feature Iso-Strength for safe, accommodating resistance; very low starting resistance; and a custom 3-piece crank system with oversized pedals.  We also have the optional boots for patients with decreased foot sensation and control.

scifit eliptical

SCIFIT Total Body Elliptical

This whole body cross trainer provides a natural total body movement that creates a true-to-life walking cadence. The Orthopedic Bio-Flex footbeds improve circulation and eliminate hot spots and numbness while the pedal movement simulates uneven surface to recruit stabilizing muscles.  The elliptical causes optimized torso rotation and core muscle recruitment for a weight-bearing total body workout.  It is a safe and easy entry for progression to weight-bearing elliptical motion

Fascial Movement Taping

At Kerrville Physical Therapy Center we provide Fascial Movement Taping (Kinesio-Taping). Kinesio taping offers many benefits.  In short, it reduces pain levels, decompresses an area of swelling and inflammation, delays fatigue, normalized muscle tone, and spreads physical stress.
